Chagas tropical disease from parasites possibly new HIV/AIDS threat to Americas'
Chagas, a tropical disease spread
by insects, is causing some fresh concern following an
editorial—published earlier this week in a medical journal—that called
it "the new AIDS of the Americas."
More than 8 million people have
been infected by Chagas, most of them in Latin and Central America. But
more than 300,000 live in the United States.
The editorial, published by the
Public Library of Science's Neglected Tropical Diseases, said the spread
of the disease is reminiscent of the early years of HIV.
"There are a number of striking
similarities between people living with Chagas disease and people living
with HIV/AIDS," the authors wrote, "particularly for those with
HIV/AIDS who contracted the disease in the first two decades of the

American soldier reunited with Afghan dog saved from dog fighting

There's nothing more heartwarming than seeing the brave men and women of our military reunite with their families when they return to the U.S. -- and seeing their reunions with their pets is just as emotional and sweet. (Pets are family too!)
U.S. staff sergeant Nick B. just reunited with his beloved dog, Bodhi, but their story is a little bit different, because this time -- Bodhi is the one who came home to the United States. You see, Nick actually found Bodhi in Afghanistan when he was just a puppy, and at that point he was hungry, dirty, and his ears and part of his tail had been cut off (horrible!) -- as he was being used for dog fighting.
Nick rescued Bodhi after trading him for packs of cigarettes (seriously?) and they were inseparable from that point on. Well, that is until it was time for Nick to return home.
The poor pup had to ride through regions occupied by the Taliban in order to make it to the airport and board a plane to join Nick and his family in Florida.

This new funding totalling $17.5 million will be allocated over the
next five years to four key activities: Prevention, early warning,

Stray dog completes 1700km China race
The dog, nicknamed "Xiaosa", joined the cyclists after one of them gave him food.
He ran with them for 20 days, covering up to 60km a day, and climbing 12 mountains.
Cyclist Xiao Yong started a blog about Xiaosa's adventures, which had attracted around 40,000 fans by the end of the race.

Calcium supplements can significantly increase the risk of heart attack, new research has found.
3 - 2 - 1- heart attack!Calcium supplements, widely recommended to elderly people and post-menopausal women, can significantly increase the risk of heart attack, new research has found.
The study by the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg involved nearly 24,000 people aged 35 to 64 whose health was tracked for an average of 11 years.
Those who used calcium supplements were twice as likely to have a heart attack as those who didn't use any vitamin/mineral supplements, it found.
Furthermore, boosting the calcium in one's diet doesn't necessarily stave off heart disease or stroke, as some past research has suggested.
"This study suggests that increasing calcium from diet might not confer significant cardiovascular benefits, while calcium supplements, which might raise [heart attack] risk, should be taken with caution," said study co-author professor Sabine Rohrmann.
Accompanying the findings, which appear online Thursday in the journal Heart, is a commentary by two professors from the University of Auckland who say "the safety of calcium supplements is now coming under increasing scrutiny."
"It is now becoming clear that taking this micronutrient in one or two daily [doses] is not natural, in that it does not reproduce the same metabolic effects as calcium in food," said professors Ian Reid and Mark Bolland.
Supplements are "neither safe nor effective," they concluded, and their use should be discouraged.Read here.

A Canadian woman climbing Mount Everest said it was “like a morgue”. Sandra Leduc was climbing Everest last weekend when four others died as she gave a chilling description of her own perilous journey, according to a report on CBC.
Sandra Leduc tweeted as another 200 climbers attempted the push to summit the 8,850-metre peak taking advantage of a break in the weather between Friday and Sunday. It turned into rush hour at the top of the world resulting in four climbers dying.

Winnipeg man had quite a personal encounter with a black bear that
dragged him out of an outhouse in a northwestern Ontario campsite over
the weekend.
The 65-year-old man and his friend, a 63-year-old man
also from Winnipeg, were camping and fishing at Dunbar Lake north of
Sioux Lookout, Ont., when the attack took place early Saturday morning,
according to Ontario Provincial Police."The male was in the outhouse and was startled by this bear," Sgt. David Pinchin of the Sioux Lookout OPP told CBC News on Tuesday.
"The bear reached in and grabbed him by the arm and dragged him out and proceeded to bite him and slash at him."
Pinchin said the victim suffered a bite in the back of his head and several scratches on his head, neck and arms.
However, the bear did not fare so well in the encounter. Police say the man's friend heard the commotion and came to the rescue by shooting and killing the bear.
The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries at hospital in Sioux Lookout and released.

About 70 people held candles, sang songs and told stories about Alexandra Wiwcharuk, who went missing May 18, 1962. Her body was found in a shallow grave two weeks later near the CPR train bridge.
"It's 50 years. I just can't believe it," said Pearl Cherneske, one of Wiwcharuk's older sisters, who came from Edmonton for the weekend.
"I feel so great that people remember and they want the murder solved like we do. I'm sure Alex is looking over us even now."

Canadian history and interest has always been a subject of mine that I pay a lot of attention to, so when I saw this book, I found myself curious about just who "The Girl in Saskatoon" was. It was a topic that hit national airwaves when it happened, but it was several years ago, so I had no memory of ever hearing about it before. I am on the east coast, though, so I imagine if you were on the west it is still a topic that gets mentioned from time to time and people still remember what they were doing when they found out.In 1961, a country singer named Johnny Cash chose a beautiful young woman named Alexandra Wiwcharuk to be his “Girl in Saskatoon” and sang to her in front of a hometown crowd. A few months later she would be found brutally murdered on the banks of the Saskatchewan River. As Sharon Butala notes, “An entire city came to a stop.” Her high school friend Alex had dreamed of becoming a glamorous stewardess; she had been crowned a beauty queen in local pageants; she was about to graduate as a nurse. Her brutal killing became a touchstone moment for Saskatoon residents: years later, people could still remember exactly what they were doing when they heard the news. It's not surprising that Iran would use a local proxy to export its dangerous dogma for western consumption. Domestically in Tehran, Iranian textbooks have instilled students with hatred toward the West, while urging grade-schoolers to become "martyrs" in a global holy war against countries perceived to be the enemies of Islam. In recent years, studies conducted by Freedom House have found that the Islamic Republic's textbooks were teaching children to embrace Islamic supremacism, with preparatory materials encouraging discrimination against women and non-Muslims.

broadcaster, Press TV, has been operating in Canadian cities like
Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa for some years now, featuring
"news reports" and "reporters" who disseminate radical propaganda and
spew anti-Semitic tropes. Without a license from the Canadian
Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), these Press TV
journalists presumably write articles hosted on Press TV's website, and

finds the opposite: Coffee drinkers are a little more likely to live
longer. Regular or decaf doesn't matter.
The study of 400,000 people is the largest ever done on the issue, and the results should reassure any coffee lovers who think it's a guilty pleasure that may do harm.
"Our study suggests that's really not the case," said lead researcher Neal Freedman of the National Cancer Institute. "There may actually be a modest benefit of coffee drinking."

Decker, a slobbering, skateboarding dog is a hit on the streets of Salt Lake City. The bulldog has been skateboarding on the streets of Salt Lake since he was five months old. He's now 18-months old, weighs in at a hefty 69 pounds, and is pretty much a superstar in his neighborhood.

The moose finally struts onto a Canadian coin

About 75 years after Canadians began making a national pastime out of mistaking the caribou on their quarters for a moose, the Royal Canadian Mint is selling a silver coin that depicts the real deal — alces alces, the king of all deer, the namesake beast of Moose Jaw, Sask., and Moosehead beer.
The caribou has been featured on Canada's 25-cent piece since 1937, but the misidentification of that antlered animal as a moose — the caribou's much larger, marsh-dwelling cousin — is as common among Canadians as it is for foreign tourists to mistake the groundhogs on Parliament Hill for beavers. Now, taxonomically challenged Canadians can compare and contrast the two minted ungulates, the moose distinguished by its conspicuous "dewlap" (the hair-covered flap of skin hanging from its lower jaw) and its larger, more flattened antlers...Continue reading....
