Indian woman rewarded for tough ‘toilet’ stand

When most people think of India I would imagine that they think of it as a great nation with a gloried past and an interesting culture; I know I did. Well, it turns out that India is no different from any other third-world country. The only difference between India and a country such as Haiti for example is that India has over 1.2 billion people; not just several million. In fact, India has more people than any other country with the exception of China. By the way, the United States has the third largest population in the world with just over 313 million people, almost a billion people less than India; and unlike India, we have toilets!

An Indian woman has been rewarded for her “bold” decision to leave her marital home within days of the wedding to protest the lack of a toilet in the household, an official said on Thursday.

Anita Narre was handed $10,000 by Sulabh International, a non-profit group, for refusing to defecate in the open and sparking a “toilet revolution” in her village in central Madhya Pradesh, according to the district magistrate.

“Narre motivated other women of her village to coax their partners to build toilets. The village is transformed today, thanks to her bold act,” B. Chadrasekhar told AFP over phone.

Narre left the household of Shivram, a labourer, after her marriage in May last year because the house had no toilet. She returned only once he had built one with help from district officials.

Chandrasekhar said a sanitation campaign that offered to build toilets in the district free of cost had hit a roadblock as villagers thought it was “dirty” to have a toilet inside the house...Continue reading...

The Canadian Press: TORONTO — First Nations leaders say a health crisis is about to be unleashed on northern Ontario reserves because thousands of residents addicted to OxyContin will soon be cut off from the prescription opiate.
The maker of OxyContin, which is up to twice as strong as morphine, will stop manufacturing the drug in Canada at the end of the month. As of March 1, Purdue Pharma Canada will replace OxyContin with a new formulation called OxyNEO.
OxyContin, taken orally in pill form, is a long-acting form of the highly addictive opioid oxycodone. But when the pill is chewed or crushed, then injected or inhaled, it produces a "heroin-like euphoria," Health Canada says.
OxyNEO will also be made with oxycodone, but it's formulated to make abuse more difficult: the tablet is hard to crush and when added to liquid, it forms a thick gel that stops oxycodone from being extracted for injection.

An agreement that is expected to allow Canadian companies to ship uranium to China is "very, very important" for Saskatchewan, Premier Brad Wall said on Thursday in reaction to news from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to the Asian superpower.
"It's a great day for Saskatchewan and we want to thank the federal government and the prime minister for raising a very Saskatchewan issue on their trade mission and making progress," Wall told reporters Thursday at the Legislative Building.

When the lights change, the birds hop in front of the cars and place walnuts, which they picked from the adjoining trees, on the road. After the lights turn green again, the birds fly away and vehicles drive over the nuts, cracking them open. Finally, when it’s time to cross again, the crows join the pedestrians and pick up their meal.

If the cars miss the nuts, the birds sometimes hop back and put them somewhere else on the road. Or they sit on electricity wires and drop them in front of vehicles.

Biologists already knew the corvid family–it includes crows, ravens, rooks, magpies and jackdaws–to be among the smartest of all birds. IT CAME as no shock to me to read in The Herald that alcohol related hospital admissions in Plymouth had 'rocketed' by 71 per cent in less than a decade.
In my view, this latest figure will have little impact on drinkers. Many people in Plymouth are addicted to alcohol and the next generation of drinkers are already making their presence felt. There is little point in shutting the stable door now, the horse bolted long ago.
The Government's lack of concrete action to deal with the country's massive booze problem implies to me that it must want the country drunk. Let's be frank, the sale of alcohol is a major source of revenue for the government. It will contribute towards the very costly continued invasion of Afghanistan. It will contribute towards the huge cost of the Olympic Games and it will contribute towards the millions of pounds that will be spent on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
In Plymouth, the council and local MPs have failed to take concrete action to tackle the massive booze problem. The NHS has focused their attention on smoking while 1,000 people a month have been admitted to Derriford Hospital with booze related medical and mental conditions. The NHS has a very clear message for smokers – 'Stop Smoking'. But, on alcohol they have been wishy-washy.
Recently a local radio presenter claimed he abstained from alcohol for the month of December. He had serious health problems but he was looking forward to his 50th birthday and to drinking again. In The Herald last week Martin Freeman informed readers that he and his wife experimented with alcohol in an attempt to abstain for four days a week. In my experience people who don't have a booze problem don't have to play around with it.
What message were both of these people trying to convey?
In my view, The Herald should have encouraged people to give up a million pints of booze in its loveLife campaign. Alcoholism kills people in many different ways. It should be taken very seriously indeed.

It might seem like birds flap their wings constantly during flight. But a new movie, that slows down the movement of a flying great tit, reveals that it often folds its wings while in the air.
Captured by Remco Brand and Ansa Fiaz, as part of the Flight Artists project at Wageningen University, the award-winning clip illustrates a turning manoeuvre often used by small birds. According to Anders Hedenström from the Animal Flight lab at Lund University, the baby great tit in this video is retracting its wings to modulate its aerodynamics before landing. However, the move isn't only used to change direction. Hedenström claims that birds also do this while cruising in the air to reduce drag. More Than 100 Bald Eagle Nests Now In New Jersey

Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- The dramatic recovery of the American bald eagle has reached a milestone in New Jersey, with more than 100 pairs now nesting in the Garden State, according to a newly released analysis of the species’ population.
The survey by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program counted 102 pairs of actively nesting eagles, plus 11 more pairs in the process of establishing nesting territories.
The survey documented a record 22 new nests, of which 16 are in southern New Jersey, four in northern New Jersey and two in central New Jersey.

Canada geese have claimed squatters' rights to this eagle's nest at Beaver Dam Lake near Tunica, Miss.

By Bryan Brasher BEAVER DAM, Miss. -- With mating season in full swing for Canada geese, people have no doubt seen the tall, majestic-looking birds nesting on the ground all over the Mid-South.

But Mike Boyd can show you something you probably haven't seen when it comes to geese.
On the edge of his property at historic Beaver Dam Lake, just outside of Tunica, Boyd can point to a pair of Canada geese sitting in an eagle's nest more than 80 feet off the ground.
The geese didn't wait for the eagles to leave and then claim an abandoned nest. They actually fought off the eagles and have forcefully occupied their home for two weeks despite their constant protests.
"At certain times, you can go out there and see the eagle sitting on the limb above the nest looking down at the geese," Boyd said. "Believe me, that eagle is not happy."...Continue reading...

The average afternoon temperature for Saskatoon in December and January hit -3.2 C, which is about seven degrees warmer than the normal temperature for the time period, said Environment Canada’s David Phillips.

For the first time, a NASA spacecraft has directly observed "alien" particles that came from beyond our solar system, astronomers announced today.
The discovery not only gives us a glimpse of what exists in the so-called interstellar medium—the matter between stars—but also offers clues to the anatomy of our local galactic neighborhood.
Orbiting Earth some 200,000 miles (322,000 kilometers) away, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft was able to snag samples of hydrogen, oxygen, and neon that came from interstellar space.
"It's exciting to be able to have these first observations of alien matter—stuff that didn't come from our sun or the planets, but came from the outside of our solar system, from other parts of the galaxy," David McComas, team leader for the IBEX program, said during a NASA news conference Tuesday.

By Brid-Aine Parnell Non-native Burmese pythons are chowing down on the local populace to such an extent that observations of many animals have declined by 99 per cent in the last eight years, and the poor old bunny rabbit hasn't been seen at all.

"Road surveys totaling 56,971 km from 2003–2011 documented a 99.3 per cent decrease in the frequency of raccoon observations, decreases of 98.9 per cent and 87.5 per cent for opossum and bobcat observations, respectively, and failed to detect rabbits," the study, published in the journal for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), said.

The researchers also found that more mammals were missing in areas where the snakes were well-established than in places where they had only been seen recently...Read here....

A remote First Nations reserve in northern Ontario has declared a state of emergency over alarming rates of prescription drug abuse.

But Health Canada officials say the government is responding swiftly to the crisis.

Russell Wesley, the community's spokesperson, said the Cat Lake First Nation's band council is seeking help from the federal government to control its drug problem.

In a population of 480, there are about 150 registered prescription drug addicts, including one pregnant woman and 120 suspected addicts who are not registered.

Frank Pinhorn was reacting to comments made by St. John’s MP Ryan Cleary, who told CBC News it’s time to decide if the provincial seal hunt should end.

The owners of Paradise Stable Horse Rescue do not have room for all the horses they'd like to save, so they make it as expensive as possible for people at auctions buying livestock for slaughter.
Bunnie and Lawrence Harasym, who have operated the horse rescue for 11 years, can only house so many horses, so when they go to horse auctions they will bid on horses they have no intention of buying to drive up the price for people looking to slaughter horses for European food markets.
"People aren't always aware what happens when their horses go to auction," Bunnie said in an interview at her acreage northwest of Saskatoon. "They're not always going to homes. They're being sent to the meat man."...Continue reading...

The issue of animal welfare is very much on people’s minds following the shocking story of Bobby, the donkey foal found starving and neglected in the Fanad area in December. Bobby died soon after being taken into the care of the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary.
The Donegal Democrat spoke to one very dedicated lady who along with the volunteers at Animals in Need cares for an endless stream of pets that require re-homing.
Margaret Plunkett is a native of the Rosses and her love for animals has been with her for as long as she can remember.
“I was always rescuing animals when I was a child. I grew up on a farm and when the calves had to go to the fair it broke my heart. And I used to help chickens that had been ‘put aside’ to escape, even though I would get told off.
“Back then helping animals just wasn’t done. When I would see an animal that needed help I used to wonder why it affected me so much. As I grew older I realised that what I had was a gift, a gift from God to love his creation.”...Continue reading...

It’s hard to think of another major twentieth-century event so closely linked with one author’s interpretation of it. Arendt, who fled Nazi Germany at 27, was already an internationally renowned scholar and public intellectual when she arrived in Jerusalem in April 1961 to cover the trial for The New Yorker.
