MP Bev Shipley says important bill lost in shuffle over national anthem vote

  Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley isn't happy a private member's bill to make O Canada more gender neutral has passed final reading in the House of Commons.
   However, he is more upset that another private member's bill – that had the potential to save lives – didn't even get a chance for consideration.
   “I'm not sure why there was a drive to trade something that's been our national anthem,” he said, adding it’s only the English version being changed.
   Bill C-210, introduced by Liberal MP Mauril Belanger, who is dying of ALS, passed by a vote of 225-74 on Wednesday. The bill calls for changing the second line in the national anthem from “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”
   The governing Liberals were hoping to have a law passed so the anthem could be changed in time for Canada Day, but that legislation may get stalled in the Senate.
   “Most people will sing it the way it is until the next generation picks it up,” Shipley said of the change that will eventually be made to the wording of the anthem.
