Amputee war vets conquer mountain

By JASON STRAZIUSO - AP --The three American war veterans from three different wars had only one good leg among them. But that didn't stop them from summiting Africa's highest mountain.
The three soldiers - veterans of Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam - scrambled, clawed and plodded to the top of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, hiking up the domed mountain's scree-filled paths on one human leg and five prosthetics made of titanium and carbon fiber.
They skidded. They fell. They removed their legs to adjust their shoes. And after six days of climbing they stood at 5895 metres (19,340 feet) - Africa's highest point.
"The message we're trying to send back ... is no matter what disability you have you can be active," said Kirk Bauer, the executive director of Disabled Sports USA and a 62-year-old Vietnam veteran who lost his leg in 1969. Bauer, of Ellicott City, Maryland, was one of the triumphant climbers...

Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus caught in southwest Saskatchewan

REGINA — Skeeters carrying the West Nile virus have winged their way to the Cypress Health Region.
Some Culex tarsalis mosquitoes infected with the virus have been caught in traps in southwest Saskatchewan.
No confirmed human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in the province. However, health officials are strongly encouraging residents to reduce the risk of mosquito bites by using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing when outdoors and reducing the amount of time spend outdoors between dusk and dawn.
Many people who get infected will have no symptoms or will only experience mild illness. Symptoms of the West Nile virus include fever, headaches and body aches. In more serious cases, the virus can result in neurological illness such as encephalitis — inflammation of the brain — which can have long-term complications.
Updated surveillance results, risk maps and weekly West Nile Culex tarsalis reports are posting every Friday on the Ministry of Health's website: Additional information about protective measures and the virus are available at HealthLine Online at

The UN says eating bugs will save planet

"...if the United Nations gets its way, we might all soon be adding creepy-crawlies to our weekly shopping lists. The UN is considering strategies to cut levels of meat consumption worldwide as part of its commitment to stamp out famine and cut global warming.
And it claims livestock, such as cows and pigs, requires too much space and fodder to be an energy-efficient source of food for the everexpanding population. Ultimately, it argues, there’s simply not enough land for us all to eat roast beef...."
