Twitter lights up with Toronto UFO chatter

Matt Ingram, QMI Agency:
TORONTO - Lights in the evening sky triggered an invasion of chatter about UFOs in the Twitterverse on Sunday.
Two videos posted to YouTube by Sarah Chun of North York shows a series of unexplained lights hovering over neighbourhoods in the Yonge St.-Sheppard Ave. area in north Toronto on Saturday night.
At least one police officer -- Const. Craig Brister -- attributed the spectacle to a toy helicopter known as a "quadcopter."
Brister, who was on patrol Saturday night, posted his explanation of the event on Twitter after someone showed him the video of the lights.
Chun, meanwhile, went to her balcony to take a closer look Saturday night, after noticing the lights while working on her laptop.
"I saw something flashing. Especially the diagonal lights, they were kind of shooting upwards," Chun said. "I thought it might be a helicopter at first, but then it wasn't moving, it was just flashing. I didn't know what it was."
Many witnesses posted images and videos on social media...Read more...

Anonymous graffiti inspires church owners - The Saskatoon Starphoenix

By Charles Hamilton, The StarphoenixAnonymous graffiti inspires church owners

Where some people might see this painting as vandalism, John Odishaw sees it as art.

Photograph by: Gord Waldner , The StarPhoenix

Some people might call it vandalism, but John Odishaw and his wife are calling it an angel.
A piece of street art appeared a week ago on the door of the abandoned church they own.
The portrait of an aboriginal youth with long braids is a welcome addition to the rundown building, they said.
Her back is turned and it appears as if she is walking into the church.
"We are calling it our little angel," said Odishaw, who is currently renovating the old building he and his wife bought six years ago.
While records are sketchy, they believe the church is more than a century old.
For years, Odishaw has worked slowly to renovate the place, which had to be gutted in order to meet modern building codes. It once stood as a Mennonite church and was for decades occupied by Senior Citizens Action Now.
While the inside is coming along, the exterior of the building is rundown. The broken concrete walls still show evidence of gang graffiti that has been painted over or washed away.
The addition of the angel has given it some life, Odishaw said.
"I'd rather see that than the garbage that goes on."
As is typical with graffiti, Odishaw doesn't know who the artist is. Technically, the piece is illegal, since it was done on private property without permission, but the "angel" has struck a chord.
"It almost brings tears to your eyes," said Kim Brown, whose father is helping with the renovations in the old church.
"I sat there for 10 minutes and I just stared."
Another piece of graffiti a few blocks away in an alley behind 20th Street appears to have been done by the same artist.
There is plenty of other graffiti in the area, but not much of it appeals to her, Brown said. She hopes the piece can inspire other artists to make tasteful street art, she said.
"I wish the younger generation could see this ... do something worthwhile that brings a tear to someone's eye."
Odishaw said he wants to thank the artist for contributing to the building. Even if the door gets taken out during the renovations, he will make sure the art remains part of the building, he said.

Quicksand Will Kill You

Jennifer Lopez Has Water Mite Named After Her

J.Lo must be feeling flattered. Pic: Vladimir Pesic
A group of scientists have named a new species of water mite after Jennifer Lopez after listening to her music while doing their research.
The biologists made the discovery while in Puerto Rico, where the Bronx-born singer has roots.
Vladimir Pesic, from the University of Montenegro, said the newly baptised Litarachna lopezae mite was found on a coral reef in Mona Passage, a treacherous body of water that separates Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
"The reason behind the unusual choice of name for the new species is ... simple: J.Lo's songs and videos kept the team in a continuous good mood when writing the manuscript and watching World Cup Soccer 2014," said Mr Pesic
He called it a small token of gratitude for the singer of hits such as Ain't It Funny, I Luh Ya Papi and his personal favourite, All I Have...Continue reading...

Family pit bull credited for saving boy’s life during house fire

family-pit-bull by INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WXIN) — A Southport boy is alive thanks to his pit bull that woke him up from a nap when his house caught fire, FOX 59 reported.
Nick Lamb, 13, was born without the ability to hear, so the smoke alarms couldn’t wake him up, but his two-and-a-half year old pit bull Ace did. This isn’t just a story about the bond between a boy and his dog.
“Comes in my room a lot, and likes to play with me, and then, we also play out in the backyard sometimes, too,” said Nick.
In Nick’s eyes, Ace is a hero.
“Yeah, he saved my life,” Nick said. “I love him a lot more.”..Read more: http://q13fox.com/2014/07/17/family-pit-bull-credited-for-saving-boys-life-during-house-fire/#ixzz37rZOxD00

Andrei Anghel identified as Canadian on downed Malaysian plane

By The Canadian Press, Postmedia News:

canadianvictimmalaysiaAnghel, 24, was attending medical school in Romania

AJAX, Ont. — A 24-year-old Ontario medical student was among the 298 people killed when a Malaysia Airlines plane was downed over Ukraine, his family said Friday.
Andrei Anghel was studying in Romania but was travelling to Bali on that flight for a vacation, his father Sorin Anghel said.
“We got the information that the flight was shot down and we knew that he took that flight so we just assumed. Later we got the confirmation, from actually Durham police came here and they gave us the official,” Anghel said, trailing off.
The airline has said at least one Canadian was on board the Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight that was brought down Thursday.
U.S. intelligence officials have said a surface-to-air missile downed the plane in an area in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists, but they did not speculate on who fired it...Continue reading...

Breaking News: Jaws in Lake Ontario

By Dave Conley: It's summer so that means that shark sightings are on the rise in the oceans... but in Lake Ontario? Isn't that a fresh water lake? Yes, but, being one of the great lakes it empties into the St. Lawrence river which eventually empties out into the Atlantic ocean. Some say it is possible for a shark to swim upstream and live in fresh water temporarily, a Great White wouldn't be able to survive but the Great Lake could certainly become home to a Bull Shark, who has the ability to breathe and maneuver quite well in fresher waters. Bull Sharks are actually much more aggressive and hostile than the usually and widely feared Great White. Not that it matters, really. I wouldn't want to swim into either of them without a huge honkin'...Continue reading...

10,000-year-old rock paintings depicting aliens and UFOs found in Chhattisgarh

CHARAMA (Chhattisgarh): Chhattisgarh state department of archaeology and culture plans to seek help from Nasa and Isro for research on 10,000-year-old rock paintings depicting aliens and UFOs in Charama region in Kanker district in tribal Bastar region.

According to archaeologist JR Bhagat, these paintings have depicted aliens like those shown in Hollywood and Bollywood flicks. Located about 130km from Raipur, the caves come under village Chandeli and Gotitola.

"The findings suggest that humans in prehistoric times may have seen or imagined beings from other planets which still create curiosity among people and researchers. Extensive research is needed for further findings. Chhattisgarh presently doesn't have any such expert who could give clarity on the subject," Bhagat told TOI. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/

How a B.C. native band went from poverty to prosperity

We’re a horse culture, and we’d like to get the inmates working with horses. I think it would be good for them to be outside, learning to deal with these beautiful animals that depend on them every day for food and exercise.

Clarence Louie

The Osoyoos Indian Band is arguably the most business-minded First Nation in Canada. So what’s the secret to their success?
The first thing that strikes you about the Osoyoos Indian Band is the postcard setting of its reserve. Deep in British Columbia’s southern Okanagan, it’s surrounded by weathered mountains and mirrored lakes. This is the hottest and driest part of Canada, a northern extension of the Sonoran Desert, where rattlesnakes inhabit sagebrush canyons and noonday summer temperatures can hit 38 C.

The Osoyoos Indian Reserve, in British Columbia's southern Okanagan, spans some 32,000 acres.
The second striking thing about the Osoyoos Indian Band is that it’s not poor. In fact, it’s arguably the most prosperous First Nation in Canada, with virtually no unemployment among the band’s 520 members. Job-seekers from elsewhere flock in to work at the band’s businesses, which last year saw $26 million in revenue and $2.5 million in net profits. Meanwhile, the reserve’s impressive school teaches native heritage and the Okanagan language.
The third singular thing about the Osoyoos Indian Band is its hard-ass leader, Chief Clarence Louie. If you ask for an appointment, he sets the tone right off the top. “Be here at 9 o’clock sharp,” he texts. “No Indian time.”...Continue reading...

Giant, 10-foot earthworm found!

Large crater appears at the 'end of the world'

By The Siberian Times reporter:  Mysterious 'gigantic' hole in remote region spotted by helicopters over gas-rich Yamal peninsula.
The striking puncture in the earth is believed to be up to 80 metres wide but its depth is not estimated yet. A scientific team has been sent to investigate the hole and is due to arrive at the scene on Wednesday.
The cause of its sudden appearance in Yamal - its name means the 'end of the world' in the far north of Siberia - is not yet known, though one scientific claim is that global warming may be to blame.
There is additionally speculation it could be caused by a space object - perhaps a meteorite - striking earth or that it is a sinkhole caused by collapsing rock beneath the hole caused by as yet unknown factors.
The giant hole appeared close to a forest some 30 kilometres from Yamal's biggest gas field Bovanenkovo.   Experts are confident that a scientific explanation will be found for it and that it is not - as one web claim suggested - evidence 'of the arrival of a UFO craft' to the planet...Continue reading...

A sudden hail storm in Novosibirsk (Russia)

Doyle Rice,USA TODAY
A sudden hail storm smashed the quiet of a day at the beach in the large Siberian city of Novosibirsk, Russia, on Saturday.
Two small children were killed by the hailstorm, though they were apparently not on the beach in this video.
As temperatures reached 98 degrees that afternoon, according to AccuWeather, a powerful thunderstorm unleashed heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail on beachgoers along the Ob River.
Some of the hailstones were the size of golf balls and hen eggs, according to a report from the Siberian Times.http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2014/07/14/hail-storm-siberia-beach/12623029/

Chasing Orwell’s Ghost - ROADS & KINGDOMS

I had come to Jura, a remote island on Scotland’s west coast, to find the solitude George Orwell had sought 65 years earlier to finish his classic, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Having been brought up in the Scottish countryside myself and subjected to both its unconscionable boredom and inexplicable beauty, I was interested to find out why a writer, who according to biographer Jeffery Meyers “hated Scotland”, chose to live in the part of the country most essential to its identity-the Highlands. I also wanted to understand why a man so accustomed to city life had come to an inaccessible island of only 190 souls to find inspiration for a novel about totalitarianism in an urbanised state—why a writer at the peak of his celebrity ensconced himself in an austere farmhouse hidden in an inhospitable Scottish landscape...Read story here.

This Canadian Leader Just Did What Obama Should Have Done But Didn’t Have The Guts To Do

harper obamaAvatar of B. Christopher Agee B. Christopher Agee

As Israeli soldiers defend their country from ongoing violence in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered support for the besieged nation. In an effort to combat the continuing attacks from Palestinian enemies, Israel’s army conducted a mission last week consisting of ground troops and air strikes that left at least 160 dead.
“The indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza on Israel are terrorist acts for which there is no justification,” he said in a recent statement.
The Canadian Press reports he went on to affirm that Hamas is “deliberately using human shields” as the terror group escalates violence in the region. Harper called on other nations to join him in coming to Israel’s defense.
“Failure by the international community to condemn these reprehensible actions would encourage these terrorists to continue their appalling actions,” he said. “Canada calls on its allies and partners to recognize that these terrorist acts are unacceptable and that solidarity with Israel is the best way of stopping the conflict.”
Harper called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to disarm Hamas terrorists in the pursuit of some semblance of peace in the embattled region. Abbas, however, has recently gone to the United Nations to seek protection for his people...Continue reading..

Family cat returns home after 13 years

Cheryl Santa Maria
Digital Reporter
If Shelby the cat could talk, she'd have some interesting stories to tell.
In 2001, the cat vanished from her home in Victoria, Australia. Owner Paula Harper-Adams thought she was long gone -- until Shelby showed up on her porch 13 years later.
"I was convinced I was crazy, but I took a photo of the cat’s face, in case anyone responded to my Facebook post (for a missing animal), and left," Paula told the Geelong Advertiser.
"I half joked that if I could find a photo of Shelby, I’d be back (to compare). Well, I went home and, like a woman possessed, searched through box after box until I found the photo I was looking for, Shelby. I took the photo back to the vet and the girls had a good look over her and the photo before coming back and announcing to me in the waiting room: ‘She is your cat.’ ’’
Shelby is now seventeen years old and settling back into domestic life.http://p.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/family-cat-returns-home-after-13-years/29892/ The Cat Came Back - [Rockabilly-1956] by Sonny James on Groovesharkhttp://grooveshark.com/#!/search?q=the+cat+came+back

Israel vs. Hamas, Day Two

Israel vs. Hamas, Day Two
John Hayward
: We have a lot of domestic issues on our plate in the United States, but we should take a moment to monitor what’s happening to our ally Israel – not only because Israel is our ally, but because civilized people should always take interest in a struggle against murderous barbarians.  And that is what this is all about.  It’s always been what the Israeli struggle against terrorism was about.  It’s civilization vs. anti-civilization.  There are Palestinians who very much want to take civilization’s side in this struggle, but the barbarians are running the show.  Maybe this time they’ll be defeated thoroughly enough for something better to rise in their place...Continue reading...
