Billions of rodents plague flood-stricken China

"Chinese residents armed with clubs, shovels and poison are attempting to kill some of the estimated 2 billion field mice and rats that are plaguing parts of the flood-ravaged country, Chinese news agencies reported Thursday..."http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/07/12/floods-china.html

Pneumonic Plague Kills Third Human In Chinese Town:"Pneumonic plague is caused by Yersina pestis, a bacterial agent that infects the lungs. It is a disease of rodents and their fleas and humans. It can spread from animals to people and from person-to-person. Initial symptoms of pneumonic plague are fever, headache, weakness and a cough which produces bloody or watery sputum. Within two to four days it can cause septic shock. Without early treatment the disease is fatal.

It is caused by the same bacterium as the one that caused the Black Death which killed about 25 million people in Europe during the Middle Ages." http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/159677.php
