Does Toxoplasmosis Make You Like Cats? This Video Could Explain Your Feline Enthusiasm

by

People have been using the "crazy cat lady" disease as an excuse to hate on the internet's favorite animal for decades, but does toxoplasmosis actually make you like cats? And then shrug and pour them a glass of kitty wine, because you're already in too deep — you might as well commit to the role...Continue reading, watch video...

Scottish Birds Continue Stealing Large Amounts of Underwear

An adult red kite, possibly on the lookout for unattended underwear, in Wales. (Photo: Tim Felce/CC BY-SA-2.0)

The swimming enthusiasts of Angus have been quietly coping with missing underwear and socks after taking a dip in a pond near the Gannochy Estate, but gamekeeper Dave Clement has solved the slightly embarrassing mystery—pinning the thefts on a pair of red kites.
The birds’ thievery isn’t motivated by concerns over modesty or a love of pranks; red kites decorate their nesting sites with found objects, frequently re-using and expanding the same nest if it has been used successfully in prior breeding seasons. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds notes that, “Paper, rags, crisp packets, carrier bags, even underwear and toys have been recorded” in kite nests. Yorkshire’s Ilkley Gazette noted red kites in the area using a stuffed rabbit, England flag, and even a program from an area funeral...http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/scottish-birds-continue-stealing-large-amounts-of-underwear

EU referendum live: Boris Johnson hails 'glorious opportunity' of Brexit as David Cameron resigns

by

David Cameron has resigned as Prime Minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union.
It followed a turbulent night with Remain campaigners quietly confident until the early hours when results from Newcastle and Sunderland showed better than expected returns for the Brexit camp.
A surprise victory for a Brexit in Swansea, which was expected to vote to Remain, did little to dampen concerns despite Scotland overwhelmingly backing staying in the Union.
Other votes in Wales began to show a trend towards a surprise Leave vote, particularly in deprived communities...http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/24/eu-referendum-live-david-cameron-resigns-as-uk-shocks-the-world/

Tuesday, June 21, 2016, 8:32 PM - An Icelandic volcano dubbed the “Gateway to Hell,” is poised to erupt for the first time in 16 years.

Hekla volcano, located in South Iceland, erupted approximately once every 10 years between 1970 and 2000. It's been quiet ever since.
Now, experts are warning people to stay away from the crater, which is a popular tourist destination.
“Hekla is a dangerous volcano,” University of Iceland Geophysics Professor Páll Einarsson said, via Icelandic news agency Visir . “We could be looking at a major disaster when the next eruption begins if we are not careful.”...https://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/gateway-to-hell-ready-to-re-open/69269

Canadian municipalities get together to help save the monarch butterfly

By

Richmond Hill, Ontario, is hoping to contribute to saving the monarch butterfly by signing onto the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, a commitment established by the U.S.-based National Wildlife Federation to restore habitat locations within the community for the endangered species.
The initiative was forwarded by City Councillor David West who has an on-going family connection to raising monarchs. “When I was a child, my father, brother and I raised and released thousands of Monarch butterflies each summer … and later in life my son and I did the same thing,” said Councillor West in a statement to council last week.
The pledge involves committing to improve local habitats for monarchs, first and foremost by planting more milkweed plants -the one and only locale where monarchs lay their eggs and their primary food source at the larval or caterpillar stage. Participating communities are also asked to plant more native trees, shrubs and nectar plants and to convert vacant lots and public spaces into butterfly friendly habitats...http://www.cantechletter.com/2016/06/canadian-municipalities-get-together-help-save-monarch-butterfly/

The Truth About the Wounded Knee Massacre

The caption says: What’s left of Big Foot’s Band. Taken near Deadwood, South Dakota in 1891. (This was after the Massacre of Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890. This was all that remained of Big Foot’s Band.) (J.C.H. Grabill/Library of Congress)

by Patti Jo King

In 1889, the pronouncements of Paiute mystic Wovoka sparked hope of the dawning of a new age among Western tribes; an age that promised an end to Euro-American oppression and a return to tribal autonomy, abundance and spiritual renewal. According to Wovoka, deliverance required participation in a regime of ritual dance and prayer. As word of his Ghost Dance Revival spread, a Lakota delegation visited him, and then carried the Ghost Dance back to their respective reservations.
On the morning of December 29, 1890, Chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot), leader of a band of some 350 Minneconjou Sioux, sat in a makeshift camp along the banks of Wounded Knee Creek. The band was surrounded by U.S. troops sent to arrest him and disarm his followers. The atmosphere was tense, since an order to arrest Chief Sitting Bull at the Standing Rock Reservation just 14 days earlier had resulted in his murder, prompting  Foot to lead his people to the Pine Ridge Agency for safe haven. Alerted to the band’s Ghost Dance activities, General Nelson Miles commanded Major Samuel Whiteside and the Seventh Cavalry to apprehend Big Foot and his followers, and the regiment intercepted them on December 28, leading them to the edge of the creek. While confiscating their weapons, a shot pierced the brisk morning air. Within seconds the charged atmosphere erupted as the Indian men rushed to retrieve their confiscated rifles and troopers began to fire volley after volley into the Sioux camp. From a hill above, a Hotchkiss machine gun raked the tipis, gun smoke filled the air, and men, women, and children ran for a ravine near the camp, only to be cut down in crossfire. More than 200 Lakota lay dead or dying in the aftermath as well as at least 20 soldiers...http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com ork.com/2016/01/01/truth-about-wounded-knee-massacre-162923?utm_content=bufferc7915&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Sad Songs Can Actually Cheer You Up

Did you ever wonder why you need to listen to Jackson Browne or Adele when you’re feeling blue? Maybe you’ve known all along what science has recently measured…that sad songs can make us happy.
Sad music can amplify pain for some people, but provide comfort to others, according to new research looking at the effects of melancholy songs on the emotions.
Researchers at Durham University in the UK and the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, said their findings could have implications for how music therapy in rehabilitation could help people’s moods...http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/sad-songs-can-actually-cheer/

Transgender “Female” MMA Fighter Brutally Injures Female Opponent

by

Transgender mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Fallon Fox is the target of criticism after brutally injuring an opponent.
Fox defeated Tamikka Brents just two minutes into the first round of the match. Brents suffered a damaged orbital bone, which required seven staples, and a concussion.
Brents summed it up: “I’ve never felt so overpowered ever in my life.”
“I’ve fought a lot of women,” Brents stated. “And never felt the strength I felt in a fight as I did that night. I can’t answer whether it’s because [he] was born a man or not, because I’m not a doctor,” she stated. “I can only say, I’ve never felt so overpowered ever in my life, and I am an abnormally strong female in my own right.”
The video of the Brents-Fox fight was pretty brutal: Fox threw knees to Brents face and torso right at the beginning, to kick off the fight. Brents ultimately turned her back to avoid more damage–and took almost a minute of hard strikes from Fox’s elbows and fists, before the referee stopped the fight...http://www.libertynewsnow.com/transgender-female-mma-fighter-brutally-injures-female-opponent/article1545

Scientists looked inside bird brains and found they’re far more sophisticated than yours

Smarter than you think. (Reuters/Ajay Verma)[image]

by Luis Georg
"Call yourself a birdbrain and expect no laughs from those around you. No, you will not be called a fool; scientists have redefined the meaning of the birdbrain. They even recommend people to take it as a compliment rather than an insult.
A new research has found that the bird macaw has more neurons packed in its smaller brain than found in the bigger sized brain of macaque. This makes the primate less intelligent than the bird. So the next time you are called a birdbrain by someone, flash a smile and thank the person.
A macaw has a brain that is a size of a walnut, while the primate in the study has lemon-sized brain. However, this doesn’t mean the bird with small brain is less intelligent. This indeed is opposite. The part of the brain that is associated with intelligent behavior is packed with more neurons in the tiny bird than the big, mammal..."http://perfscience.com/content/2144218-feel-proud-be-called-birdbrain-study

MP Bev Shipley says important bill lost in shuffle over national anthem vote

By Ellwood Shreve, Chatham Daily News
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley isn't happy a private member's bill to make O Canada more gender neutral has passed final reading in the House of Commons.
However, he is more upset that another private member's bill – that had the potential to save lives – didn't even get a chance for consideration.
“I'm not sure why there was a drive to trade something that's been our national anthem,” he said, adding it’s only the English version being changed.
Bill C-210, introduced by Liberal MP Mauril Belanger, who is dying of ALS, passed by a vote of 225-74 on Wednesday. The bill calls for changing the second line in the national anthem from “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”
The governing Liberals were hoping to have a law passed so the anthem could be changed in time for Canada Day, but that legislation may get stalled in the Senate.
“Most people will sing it the way it is until the next generation picks it up,” Shipley said of the change that will eventually be made to the wording of the anthem.
He said the Liberals made the change for the wrong reason, saying the bill was rammed through without having a chance to be taken to committee...http://www.chathamdailynews.ca/2016/06/16/mp-bev-shipley-says-important-bill-lost-in-shuffle-over-national-anthem-vote

Delhi University students with Wildlife Rescue save injured birds

  •    It’s in our hands to save the voiceless if we can and make a difference. Following this motto, a group of Delhi University students (DU) along with Wildlife Rescue, an organisation dedicated to rescuing birds in distress rescued 91 birds that were injured and rendered homeless after a massive dust storm resulted in uprooted trees.
One of the students Abhinav Garg, PHD in Environmental Studies, says, “ It was around 7.30 in the night when I saw the fallen trees after the dust storm. I even got a glimpse of birds stuck under the broken branches. I didn’t know what to do. Then somebody suggested that I take the help of Wildlife Rescue. They reached there and the rescue operation went on till 3 am in the morning.”...http://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi/du-students-with-wildlife-rescue-save-injured-birds/story-Ok6PITBPxPcSsx74n3YHmO.html

Israel builds the wall — underground — to block tunnels

By

Israeli soldiers drill holes on the Israeli side of the border with the Gaza Strip as they search for Hamas terror tunnels. /AFP

Israel is constructing a wall that will cover 60 miles of land around its border with the Gaza Strip in an effort to thwart Hamas terror tunnels.
The concrete structure, at a cost of $570 million, will be built tens of meters above and below ground and will be similar to the “West Bank barrier separating Israelis from violent Palestinians in Judea and Samaria,” Ynet reported on June 16.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Jewish state was forced to build the barriers to “protect Israel against beasts” who seek to carry out attacks against Jews. He made the comments earlier this year while touring a new security fence near the southern Israeli city of Eilat which was being built along Israel’s border with Jordan...http://www.worldtribune.com/israel-builds-the-wall-underground-to-block-tunnels/

The Deadly Lake Where 75 Percent of the World's Lesser Flamingos Are Born: Lake Natron will kill a human, but flamingos breed on its salty water

At the base of a mountain in Tanzania’s Gregory Rift, Lake Natron burns bright red, surrounded by the calcified remains of animals that were unfortunate enough to fall into the salty water. Bats, swallows and more are chemically preserved in the pose in which they perished; deposits of sodium carbonate in the water (a chemical once used in Egyptian mummification) seal the creatures in their watery tomb. The lake's landscape is surreal and deadly—and made even more bizarre by the fact that it's the place where nearly 75 percent of the world's lesser flamingos are born.
The water is oversaturated with salt, can reach temperatures of 140 degrees and has a pH between 9 and 10.5—so corrosive that it can calcify those remains, strip ink off printed materials and burn the skin and eyes of unadapted animals. The unique color comes from cyanobacteria that photosynthesize into bright red and orange hues as the water evaporates and salinity rises; before that process occurs during the dry season, the lake is blue....http://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/flamingos-find-life-among-death-180959265/?no-istc

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

High levels of vitamin D is suspected of increasing mortality rates

Professor Peter Schwarz

The level of vitamin D in our blood should neither be too high nor to low. Scientists from the University of Copenhagen are the first in the world to show that there is a connection between high levels of vitamin D and cardiovascular deaths.
In terms of public health, a lack of vitamin D has long been a focal point. Several studies have shown that too low levels can prove detrimental to our health. However, new research from the University of Copenhagen reveals, for the first time, that also too high levels of vitamin D in our blood is connected to an increased risk of dying from a stroke or a coronary...http://news.ku.dk/all_news/2015/03/high-levels-of-vitamin-d-is-suspected-of-increasing-mortality-rates/

A post from a soldier's mother in Israel

A Soldier's Mother: Trying to Be Normal

"...As the numbers rise, as they almost always do, sadness comes next. It is the feeling of being haunted and hunted, hated to such an incredible depth that you don’t think they, whoever they may be, can overcome their hatred. The waste of it all, the lives lost. The old, the young, the parents, the orphans. The perfect ones, the good ones, the brave ones. Frozen in time, leaving you to move forwards through the grief and the sadness alone.
The brutality of the attack makes you so depressed. How could someone do such a thing? How is it possible to shoot a baby, target a little boy? How can a human being explode himself intentionally next to a teenage girl, stab a pregnant woman, lynch a 67-year-old grandfather? Such anger they must have, such hatred..."Read complete post >>http://israelisoldiersmother.blogspot.ca/2016/06/trying-to-be-normal.html?spref=tw

Qu'Appelle Valley calls to B.D. Willoughby

Stephanie McKay, Saskatoon StarPhoenix
More from Stephanie McKay, Saskatoon StarPhoenix

photo ; bdwilloughby.bandcamp.com/album/the-quappelle-valley
The striking image of a woman in black looking out at a hilly Saskatchewan countryside was the catalyst for a new album by Regina musician B.D. Willoughby. Qu’Appelle Valley is a roots record that beckons people to learn more about the history of the place for which it’s named.
   – B.D. Willoughby, aka Brett Dolter, discovered the photo through a book called Qu’Appelle: Tales of Two Valleys, which was created for an exhibit at the Mendel Art Gallery. It reminded him of the Legend of the Qu’Appelle Valley by E. Pauline Johnson, a story about two lovers who lived there. Returning from a hunt, a young man heard someone call out his name. He asked ‘Who calls?’ in French (‘Que Appelle?’), but heard no response. When he returned to his village his love had died. Residents told him before she died, she had called his name. Legend has it, you can still hear that call echoing through the valley. That story and photo inspired the title track of the album...http://thestarphoenix.com/entertainment/music/quappelle-valley-calls-to-b-d-willoughby

Venezuelan social order collapsing as looting, robbery and murder become the norm

By John Sexton: The socialist revolution in Venezuela has resulted in a country with sky-high inflation, no medicine, no food and, finally, no security. The Los Angeles Times has an excellent piece on the rise of robbery, kidnapping and murder that have made the nation a place where dead bodies in the street are a common sight:
Savvy motorists avoid certain thoroughfares after dark, when carjack gangs set up ambushes, sometimes laying down nail-embedded strips to puncture tires of vehicles ferrying potential quarry.  Motorists speak matter-of-factly of spotting body parts along roadways.
The exact murder rate in Venezuela is a subject of debate but an outside group puts the number at 27,875 murders in 2015, which works out to 90 per every 100,000 people. And because most of the murderers are never arrested, much less convicted, many have given up on the police. Some Venezuelans are resorting to gruesome revenge attacks on those they believe responsible:..http://hotair.com/archives/2016/06/06/venezuelan-social-order-collapsing-as-looting-robbery-and-murder-become-the-norm/

Netanyahu: Yes to peace, no to dividing Jerusalem

By TOVAH LAZAROFF,JEREMY SHARON

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Sunday not to divide Jerusalem in his pursuit of a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
“The idea of a divided, split, wounded city is one we will never return to,” Netanyahu said as he spoke at a special ceremony at Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem to mark the unification of the city 49 years ago, during the Six Day War.
“We will never abandon the Kotel and our ties to the Temple Mount will never be denied,” Netanyahu said.
Later in the evening, at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva, he said: “We will not be ousted from our city or our land. I will not oust people from their homes and we will not be ousted from our homes.”
He spoke of the important of Israeli rule to the vision of a heavenly Jerusalem that provides a safe haven for Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
“There was no peace [here] for the [three] religions until Jerusalem was under Israeli sovereignty. Someone was always dispossessed. It is only when we watch over the city, under Israeli sovereignty, that there can be freedom for the three religions.”...http://m.jpost.com/Israel-News/Politics-And-Diplomacy/PM-Yes-to-peace-no-to-dividing-capital

Facial recognition will soon end your anonymity

By

TarunWadhwa

Nearly 250 million video surveillance cameras have been installed throughout the world, and chances are you’ve been seen by several of them today. Most people barely notice their presence anymore — on the streets, inside stores, and even within our homes. We accept the fact that we are constantly being recorded because we expect this to have virtually no impact on our lives. But this balance may soon be upended by advancements in facial recognition technology.
Soon anybody with a high-resolution camera and the right software will be able to determine your identity. That’s because several technologies are converging to make this accessible. Recognition algorithms have become far more accurate, the devices we carry can process huge amounts of data, and there’s massive databases of faces now available on social media that are tied to our real names. As facial recognition enters the mainstream, it will have serious implications for your privacy...Continue reading...

European Union Declares War On Internet Free Speech

Submitted by Soren Kern via The Gatestone Institute,
  • Opponents counter that the initiative amounts to an assault on free speech in Europe. They say that the European Union's definition of "hate speech" and "incitement to violence" is so vague that it could include virtually anything deemed politically incorrect by European authorities, including criticism of mass migration, Islam or even the EU itself.
  • Some Members of the European Parliament have characterized the EU's code of online conduct -- which requires "offensive" material to be removed from the Internet within 24 hours -- as "Orwellian."
  • "By deciding that 'xenophobic' comment in reaction to the crisis is also 'racist,' Facebook has made the view of the majority of the European people... into 'racist' views, and so is condemning the majority of Europeans as 'racist.'" — Douglas Murray.
  • In January 2013, Facebook suspended the account of Khaled Abu Toameh after he wrote about corruption in the Palestinian Authority. The account was reopened 24 hours later, but with the two posts deleted and no explanation.
The European Union (EU), in partnership with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft, has unveiled a "code of conduct" to combat the spread of "illegal hate speech" online in Europe.
Proponents of the initiative argue that in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, a crackdown on "hate speech" is necessary to counter jihadist propaganda online.
