The swimming enthusiasts of Angus have been quietly coping with missing underwear and socks after taking a dip in a pond near the Gannochy Estate, but gamekeeper Dave Clement has solved the slightly embarrassing mystery—pinning the thefts on a pair of red kites.
The birds’ thievery isn’t motivated by concerns over modesty or a love of pranks; red kites decorate their nesting sites with found objects, frequently re-using and expanding the same nest if it has been used successfully in prior breeding seasons. Canadian municipalities get together to help save the monarch butterfly
Richmond Hill, Ontario, is hoping to contribute to saving the monarch butterfly by signing onto the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, a commitment established by the U.S.-based National Wildlife Federation to restore habitat locations within the community for the endangered species.
The initiative was forwarded by City Councillor David West who has an on-going family connection to raising monarchs. “When I was a child, my father, brother and I raised and released thousands of Monarch butterflies each summer … and later in life my son and I did the same thing,” said Councillor West in a statement to council last week.
The pledge involves committing to improve local habitats for monarchs, first and foremost by planting more milkweed plants -the one and only locale where monarchs lay their eggs and their primary food source at the larval or caterpillar stage. In 1889, the pronouncements of Paiute mystic Wovoka sparked hope of the dawning of a new age among Western tribes; an age that promised an end to Euro-American oppression and a return to tribal autonomy, abundance and spiritual renewal. According to Wovoka, deliverance required participation in a regime of ritual dance and prayer. As word of his Ghost Dance Revival spread, a Lakota delegation visited him, and then carried the Ghost Dance back to their respective reservations.
On the morning of December 29, 1890, Chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot), leader of a band of some 350 Minneconjou Sioux, sat in a makeshift camp along the banks of Wounded Knee Creek. The band was surrounded by U.S. troops sent to arrest him and disarm his followers. The atmosphere was tense, since an order to arrest Chief Sitting Bull at the Standing Rock Reservation just 14 days earlier had resulted in his murder, prompting Foot to lead his people to the Pine Ridge Agency for safe haven. Alerted to the band’s Ghost Dance activities, General Nelson Miles commanded Major Samuel Whiteside and the Seventh Cavalry to apprehend Big Foot and his followers, and the regiment intercepted them on December 28, leading them to the edge of the creek. While confiscating their weapons, a shot pierced the brisk morning air. Within seconds the charged atmosphere erupted as the Indian men rushed to retrieve their confiscated rifles and troopers began to fire volley after volley into the Sioux camp. From a hill above, a Hotchkiss machine gun raked the tipis, gun smoke filled the air, and men, women, and children ran for a ravine near the camp, only to be cut down in crossfire. Transgender “Female” MMA Fighter Brutally Injures Female Opponent
Transgender mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Fallon Fox is the target of criticism after brutally injuring an opponent.
Fox defeated Tamikka Brents just two minutes into the first round of the match. Brents suffered a damaged orbital bone, which required seven staples, and a concussion.
Brents summed it up: “I’ve never felt so overpowered ever in my life.”
“I’ve fought a lot of women,” Brents stated. “And never felt the strength I felt in a fight as I did that night. I can’t answer whether it’s because [he] was born a man or not, because I’m not a doctor,” she stated. “I can only say, I’ve never felt so overpowered ever in my life, and I am an abnormally strong female in my own right.”

MP Bev Shipley says important bill lost in shuffle over national anthem vote

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MP Bev Shipley isn't happy a private member's bill to make O Canada more gender neutral has passed final reading in the House of Commons.
However, he is more upset that another private member's bill – that had the potential to save lives – didn't even get a chance for consideration.
“I'm not sure why there was a drive to trade something that's been our national anthem,” he said, adding it’s only the English version being changed.
Bill C-210, introduced by Liberal MP Mauril Belanger, who is dying of ALS, passed by a vote of 225-74 on Wednesday. The bill calls for changing the second line in the national anthem from “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”
The governing Liberals were hoping to have a law passed so the anthem could be changed in time for Canada Day, but that legislation may get stalled in the Senate.
“Most people will sing it the way it is until the next generation picks it up,” Shipley said of the change that will eventually be made to the wording of the anthem.

Delhi University students with Wildlife Rescue save injured birds

(DU) along with Wildlife Rescue, an organisation dedicated to rescuing
birds in distress rescued 91 birds that were injured and rendered

One of the students Abhinav Garg, PHD in Environmental Studies, says, “ It was around 7.30 in the night when I saw the fallen trees after the dust storm. I even got a glimpse of birds stuck under the broken branches. I didn’t know what to do. Then somebody suggested that I take the help of Wildlife Rescue. The concrete structure, at a cost of $570 million, will be built tens of meters above and below ground and will be similar to the “West Bank barrier separating Israelis from violent Palestinians in Judea and Samaria,” Ynet reported on June 16.

that were unfortunate enough to fall into the salty water. Bats,
swallows and more are chemically preserved in the pose in which they
perished; deposits of sodium carbonate
in the water (a chemical once used in Egyptian mummification) seal the
creatures in their watery tomb. The lake's landscape is surreal and
deadly—and made even more bizarre by the fact that it's the place where
nearly 75 percent of the world's lesser flamingos are born.
The water is oversaturated with salt, can reach temperatures of 140 degrees and has a pH between 9 and 10.5—so corrosive that it can calcify those remains, strip ink off printed materials and burn the skin and eyes of unadapted animals. The striking image of a woman in black looking out at a hilly Saskatchewan countryside was the catalyst for a new album by Regina musician B.D. Willoughby. Qu’Appelle Valley is a roots record that beckons people to learn more about the history of the place for which it’s named.
– B.D. Willoughby, aka Brett Dolter, discovered the photo through a book called Qu’Appelle: Tales of Two Valleys, which was created for an exhibit at the Mendel Art Gallery. It reminded him of the Legend of the Qu’Appelle Valley by E. Pauline Johnson, a story about two lovers who lived there. Returning from a hunt, a young man heard someone call out his name. He asked ‘Who calls?’ in French (‘Que Appelle?’), but heard no response. When he returned to his village his love had died. Residents told him before she died, she had called his name. Legend has it, you can still hear that call echoing through the valley. Fusing art and activism, Nick Brandt focuses on the animals that roam Tanzania and Kenya, capturing their majesty in monumental, black-and-white and sepia-toned photographs—as well as fighting for their preservation, along with the conservationist Richard Bonham, through their Big Life Foundation. He fell in love with East Africa in 1995, while directing Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” music video. In 2000, he returned to photograph the elephants, lions, and other animals populating the region and realized that they were being ravaged. As he describes, “I wanted to create a last testament for these extraordinary animals in these extraordinary places. Netanyahu: Yes to peace, no to dividing Jerusalem

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Sunday not to divide Jerusalem in his pursuit of a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
“The idea of a divided, split, wounded city is one we will never return to,” Netanyahu said as he spoke at a special ceremony at Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem to mark the unification of the city 49 years ago, during the Six Day War.
“We will never abandon the Kotel and our ties to the Temple Mount will never be denied,” Netanyahu said.
Later in the evening, at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva, he said: “We will not be ousted from our city or our land. I will not oust people from their homes and we will not be ousted from our homes.”
He spoke of the important of Israeli rule to the vision of a heavenly Jerusalem that provides a safe haven for Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
“There was no peace [here] for the [three] religions until Jerusalem was under Israeli sovereignty. Someone was always dispossessed. European Union Declares War On Internet Free Speech

The European Union (EU), in partnership with Facebook,
Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft, has unveiled a "code of conduct" to
combat the spread of "illegal hate speech" online in Europe.
Proponents of the initiative argue that in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, a crackdown on "hate speech" is necessary to counter jihadist propaganda online.
Opponents counter that the initiative amounts to an assault on free speech in Europe. They say that the EU's definition of "hate speech" and "incitement to violence" is so vague that it could include virtually anything deemed politically incorrect by European authorities, including criticism of mass migration, Islam or even the European Union itself.
