Whirling disease found outside of Banff has experts on edge

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says whirling disease has been
discovered in fish from Johnson Lake in Banff National Park and now

The deadly whirling disease has been detected outside of Banff National Park for the first time and it's causing anxiety among officials. The disease affects trout and salmon and can cause infected fish to swim in a whirling pattern and die prematurely.
Up until recently, all known cases were found inside the national park.
But now, a Lacombe-area trout farm owner isn't sure what his next steps will be, now that the disease has been found at his facility earlier this month.
Lacombe is north of Red Deer and almost 300 kilometres from Banff.
"We're positive so now what?" asks Jack Fraser.
"Do I just sit here? I can't sell the fish, I can't buy a fish. Most of us we all hatch them right. You buy eggs and you hatch them. I can't do that either. I can't get more fish started for next year or whenever. So you're in limbo. In the meantime they quarantine you."
A biologist with the conservation group Trout Unlimited says Fraser's not alone.

I recently visited Ottawa for a weekend, and the ultimate highlight of my trip was not Parliament Hill, the National Gallery of Canada nor the Rideau Canal.
It was the Siberian Cat Cafe in nearby Chelsea, Que.
It was clean, bright and inviting to
humans, complete with cozy nooks and crannies for the cats that live
there. Since Siberian cats are hypoallergenic, and the cafe houses
Siberian cats only, it’s pleasant even for people who have allergies.
Here’s how it works.
My friend and I entered in the bistro area,
where we were greeted by a host. We ordered our coffee and he asked if
we would be sitting inside with the cats. Of course we were. He then
told us the ground rules, which were really quite simple. No picking
them up off the ground, no playing with our fingers (they don’t want the
cats to see all fingers as toys) and no disturbing them if they’re
sleeping or eating. Fair enough.
The bistro area and a patio make it possible for non-cat lovers to get their caffeine fix as well.
But we cat lovers washed our hands and went
through the door into the cat salon. It had cat condos, and plenty of
structures for the felines, and a big window sill where they could bask
in the sunlight. A bird feeder on the other side of the window keeps the
cats entertained.
I found a table, thinking I’d like to
observe the cats, but soon enough, I was walking around with my coffee,
greeting and petting the beautiful felines and, of course, using all the
memory on my phone taking photos of them. There were plenty of
comfortable couches and chairs for humans to sit on as well.

Homeless Man With Great Love for His Dog Touched by an Angel
Patrick would do anything for his dog, Franklin, even making sure he got food first. When things went from worse to much worse, he took to a cardboard sign with the words “Dog in Pound – Need Help.” Wilma Price saw that sign and felt compelled to find out Patrick’s tale.
This is an amazing story about a woman who saw a homeless man and was touched by what she read. So much so, when his story unfolded, in spite of her own personal challenges, she was compelled to help this man and his dog.

U.S. Chess Star’s Petition Against Holding Women’s Tournament in Iran Exceeds 15k Signatures
Iran is forcing women to cover their hair at the next world chess championship—and the reigning American female chess champion is circulating a petition in protest. Nazà Paikidze-Barnes, 22, exceeded her initial goal of collecting 15,000 signatures on Tuesday, one week after her appeal was first posted online.
The petition calls on the World Chess Federation (FIDE)—which “rejects discriminatory treatment for national, political, racial, social or religious reasons or on account of sex” in its handbook—to reconsider its choice of Iran as tournament host. Paikidze-Barnes, who authored the document, declared she will be boycotting the contest “even if it means missing one of the most important competitions of my career.”
“Some consider a hijab part of culture,” Paikidze-Barnes said in an Instagram post announcing her decision. “But, I know that a lot of Iranian women are bravely protesting this forced law daily and risking a lot by doing so. A wildlife photographer has captured a rare sighting of a pelican in North Devon.
Sam Aston shared the photo of the bird on the water at Braunton Marshes this afternoon (Monday).
