Horrible court decision leaves aboriginal girl to die - The Starphoenix

Six Nations supporter Jamie Clause (LEFT) looks on Six Nations Chief Ava Hill (RIGHT) and Chief Bryan LaForme (CENTRE) of the Mississauga New Credit out front of Brantford's Ontario Court of Justice after a judge dismissed the CAS request to force a 11 year old aboriginal girl to receive chemotherapy, Friday November 13, 2014.

By Les MacPherson, The Starphoenix:   This is a horrible decision out of Ontario, where a judge has ruled that aboriginal rights trump a child's right to life.
   The case has been well publicized. An 11-year-old aboriginal girl, stricken with leukemia, was receiving chemotherapy at Mc-Master Children's Hospital in Hamilton. Without this treatment, according to expert medical evidence, the child almost certainly will die. With the chemotherapy, she has a 90 to 95 per cent chance of surviving to old age.
   The girl's mother nevertheless came to reject chemotherapy as poison, which it is, but only in the same sense that heart surgery is a stabbing. She removed her daughter from hospital and discontinued her treatment, instead relying on alternative and traditional aboriginal medicines. The girl now is at a Florida licensed massage clinic where cancer patients are treated with organic vegetables and positive thinking.
   When the mother discharged her daughter from hospital in Hamilton, against medical advice, the hospital sought a court order to remove the girl from the mother's custody for the purpose of saving her life by continuing her chemotherapy. The judge said no. To grant such an order would violate the mother's aboriginal rights, as guaranteed in the Charter, he ruled.
   That's fine, but what about the girl's rights? Her right to life, liberty and security of the person is likewise guaranteed by the Charter. To deny her this most fundamental of rights in effect is to deny all of her rights because she almost certainly will die as a result. If she were treated against the mother's wishes, however, she keeps all of her rights and her mother keeps almost all of her rights. For the scales of justice to tilt the other way is a travesty. To put aboriginal rights or any other rights ahead of a child's right to life-saving medical treatment approaches the obscene....Read more:http://www.thestarphoenix.com/health/MacPherson+Horrible+court+decision+leaves+aboriginal+girl/10390438/story.html

Harper vows he won't drop Ukraine whether it takes five months or 50 years

By: The Canadian Press: BRISBANE, Australia - Stephen Harper said Sunday it's important to keep up the pressure on Ukraine as he discussed his celebrated showdown with the Russian president at the Group of 20 summit in Australia.
Speaking to the Canadian media at the end of the meeting, the prime minister grinned when asked about his admonishment to Vladimir Putin to get out of Ukraine, though quickly checked himself.
"It is necessary for all of us to keep the pressure on Mr. Putin and his regime and to do so over the long term, to make it clear that it will not be business as usual," he said.
"We cannot have a major power in this day and age seize the sovereign territory of another country, and simply move on as if nothing's happened."
If the world community eases up on Russia for its annexation of Crimea earlier this year, he added, it will only whet Putin's appetite for similar aggression.
"We send the message, as I think we have in Canada, that whether it takes fives months or 50 years, we're not going to drop the subject until Ukrainian territory is returned to Ukrainians."..Read more:http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/day-2-of-g20-summit-to-be-heavy-on-economics-although-putin-climate-looms-large-282805261.html

William Shakespeare - To be, or not to be (from Hamlet 3/1)

skull[image]

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd. http://www.artofeurope.com/shakespeare/sha8.htm

Summary:
I spent the summer before law school getting to know the gentlemen in the video clip above, and found myself at a crossroad. I shared with Darryl, my internal struggle on whether I should embark on another academic journey into the ivory tower, or opt to "stay in the trenches" with my them. They had strongly advised that I go to law school. Darryl had told me,"Diana, you need to go, so you can use what you learn to help people like us." I took his words to heart, and now I find myself hearing the echo of his powerful statement shared in the video:
"I don't want to survive, I want to thrive. We need to get out of where we are, if that's what we want. I don't want to die here." ...Continue reading...

Deadly cat disease outbreak in Saskatoon: SPCA - update

CBC - Deadly cat disease outbreak in Saskatoon: SPCADeadly cat disease outbreak in Saskatoon: SPCA                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Cat owners in Saskatoon are being warned to watch out for a deadly feline disease.
According to the local SPCA, the city has been hit by an outbreak of a disease called Panleukopenia.
On Monday, the SPCA announced it is under quarantine after two cats with the disease were admitted in October. There have been at least two other cases, according to Patricia Cameron, the executive director of the Saskatoon SPCA.
The local pet shelter is urging owners to vaccinate their cats as soon as possible, because the disease is so contagious.
"The vaccines are very effective, and the best possible way to protect your pet," Cameron said in a release.
According to Cameron, indoor cats are also susceptible to the disease.
"When you take a stroll, go from your car to the house, or do yard work, the virus can come into your house on your clothes and shoes," she said. The virus can survive for up to a year in certain environments.

However, if owners believe their pets have the disease, they should be brought into a vet as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Panleukopenia include depression, lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, and self-biting on the tail, lower back, and legs.
The disease attacks the lining of the digestive system and can lead to bloody diarrhea, rapid dehydration, and pain. Panleukopenia can also leave cats vulnerable to other diseases because it compromises their immune system. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/deadly-cat-disease-outbreak-saskatoon-113000758.html                                                                                                                                                                                     Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper) in Cats & Kittens: Read here.

Students want gender-neutral school washrooms

[image]

By Charles Hamilton, The Starphoenix:
Dani Despins doesn't go to the bathroom at school.
Despins, a Grade 12 student at Tommy Douglas Collegiate, has to leave the building to feel safe enough to enter a public washroom. The signs on the door just don't fit.
"I've had times where I've had to just not go to the bathroom because I feel so uneasy going into the washroom," Despins said.
Despins identifies as gender queer, and shies away from using any gendered pronoun. Now the student activist is asking the school division to install a genderneutral washroom at Tommy Douglas.
"You can get distracted from your actual work because you are so paranoid and you don't know what to do," Despins said, estimating about 20 students at Tommy Douglas would make use of a gender-neutral washroom.
One Saskatoon high school, Walter Murray Collegiate, has already installed two gender-neutral washrooms - single-stall facilities with locking doors. The signs outside indicate anyone, regardless of gender, can use them.
Those facilities are an important step in making transgender students feel safe, according to the youth and education co-ordinator at the Avenue Community Centre, Amanda Guthrie.
"I think going to the washroom is something we take for granted a lot, but for people who are gender queer or transgender or don't identify with the gender binary, this is a big deal," Guthrie said.
She's heard of students like Despins who wait all day to go to the washroom because they risk ridicule if they enter a standard washroom, and she knows students who have been accused of being the in "wrong washroom," she said.
Guthrie said she has been in contact with Saskatoon Public School Division officials, who told her they are working on the genderneutral washroom issue on a case-by-case basis.
Despite the mounting pressure, there is no word on whether a gender-neutral washroom will be installed at Tommy Douglas.
Guthrie said all initiatives to have gender-neutral washrooms are student-led and she commends the division for taking student concerns seriously. "Their voices are being heard."
No one from Saskatoon Public Schools was available to comment.
"To date, our division has not received any requests to provide washrooms signed specifically as genderneutral facilities," Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools spokeswoman Donella Hoffman said in an email.
"We do not have a policy about how we accommodate people who present with specific needs concerning washroom facilities in general," she added.
"We would respond to a request for gender-neutral facilities as we would to any student who asks for an accommodation in connection with washroom facilities, in that we would explore ways in which to meet their needs so that they feel safe, comfortable and respected." cthamilton@thestarphoenix.
