A perilous journey for two Americans lost at sea for five months after their boat lost power in a Pacific Ocean storm has ended with the rescue of the women and their dogs, the Navy said Thursday.

"They saved our lives," Jennifer Appel said after the rescue. "The pride and smiles we had when we saw (the ship) on the horizon was pure relief."

Appel and Tasha Fuiaba, both from Honolulu, said they and their two dogs left Hawaii for Tahiti this spring, but their engine failed May 30 during bad weather. Having a pet in the home — particularly a dog or a cat — has been repeatedly found to have a positive effect on people’s overall stress levels and mood.

As one researcher put it, pets are not “a panacea for emotional wellbeing,” yet “one's health and happiness improves in a meaningful fashion from pet ownership.” But what it is about human interactions with dogs and cats that lead to health and happiness benefits?

Two recently published studies offer some interesting insights. One found that dogs change their facial expressions in response to human attention. The other found that cats seek out contact with their owners after a long separation.

The president of Turkmenistan has presented Vladimir Putin with a belated birthday gift following their summit Wednesday – a home-bred Turkmen shepherd dog.

The Russian president, who celebrated his 65th birthday Saturday, had been meeting his Turkmen counterpart Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in Sochi to discuss energy markets when he was presented with the breed known as an ‘alabai.’

Native to Central Asia, the dog is officially listed as part of Turkmenistan’s national heritage and is traditionally used by shepherds to protect their flocks.

As Halloween approaches, many people are preparing for creepy, uninvited guests to drop by their home. But for weeks now, Cape Breton resident Dale Capstick has been enduring nightly visits from unwelcome and very large eight-legged creatures.

"Very frightening," says Capstick, as she describes spiders the size of a human palm and that run with lightning speed. "We always see them along the baseboard, occasionally crawling up the door trim."
