Last fall I was on my deathbed. But, God so graciously gifted me with more time on this Earth. And, in gratitude, I have decided to launch a new project.

Can coffee protect our eyesight?

Cup of coffee and beans
Researchers found that coffee extract and CGA protected mice against retinal degeneration.
Written by
Coffee has been associated with an array of health benefits recently. Last month, Medical News Today reported on a study suggesting that coffee consumption may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Now, new research finds that drinking the beverage may protect against deteriorating eyesight and even blindness.
Researchers from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, recently published their findings in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
We all know the main ingredient in coffee as caffeine - the stimulant that gives us that boost. But according to the research team, including senior author Chang Y. Lee, green coffee beans (raw coffee) only contain 1% caffeine.
However, each raw coffee bean contains around 7-9% chlorogenic acid (CGA) - an antioxidant that has been associated with many health benefits, such as weight loss and reduction of blood pressure... Continue reading...

The Obama Bird Genocide Is Out of Control

An adorable baby bald eagle whose parents were executed by solar panels. (AP)
The Obama administration has opened up a new front in its war on America’s eagles. For years, the president has relied on wind turbines to orchestrate his eco-genocide. Biologists estimate that wind farms kill as many as 328,000 birds each year by chopping them out of the sky. The administration’s successful weaponization of solar farms will only accelerate the death rate.
Studies indicate that the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in California has proved to be an especially efficient apparatus for eagle extermination. The facility, which was financed in part by a $1.6 billion taxpayer-backed loan from the Department of Energy, has been incinerating innocent birds with heat lasers created by its massive array of 350,000 garage door-sized mirrors...Continue reading...

Israel Won’t Stop Spying on the U.S.

5.9_PG0219_Israel_01
Israel is flouting the “friendly” rules of espionage to steal U.S. trade and tech secrets
By Whatever happened to honor among thieves? When the National Security Agency was caught eavesdropping on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone, it was considered a rude way to treat a friend. Now U.S. intelligence officials are saying—albeit very quietly, behind closed doors on Capitol Hill—that our Israeli “friends” have gone too far with their spying operations here.
According to classified briefings on legislation that would lower visa restrictions on Israeli citizens, Jerusalem’s efforts to steal U.S. secrets under the cover of trade missions and joint defense technology contracts have “crossed red lines.”
Israel’s espionage activities in America are unrivaled and unseemly, counterspies have told members of the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs committees, going far beyond activities by other close allies, such as Germany, France, the U.K. and Japan. A congressional staffer familiar with a briefing last January called the testimony “very sobering…alarming…even terrifying.” Another staffer called it “damaging.”
The Jewish state’s primary target: America’s industrial and technical secrets.
“No other country close to the United States continues to cross the line on espionage like the Israelis do,” said a former congressional staffer who attended another classified briefing in late 2013, one of several in recent months given by officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the State Department, the FBI and the National Counterintelligence Directorate.
The intelligence agencies didn’t go into specifics, the former aide said, but cited “industrial espionage—folks coming over here on trade missions or with Israeli companies working in collaboration with American companies, [or] intelligence operatives being run directly by the government, which I assume meant out of the [Israeli] Embassy.”
An Israeli Embassy spokesman flatly denied the charges Tuesday after initially declining to comment. Aaron Sagui told Newsweek "Israel doesn't conduct espionage operations in the United States, period. We condemn the fact that such outrageous, false allegations are being directed against Israel."...Continue reading...                                                                                                                                             Related: Obama knew about NSA spying on Merkel

Two Saskatoon men are one step closer to blasting off the planet forever.
Andrew Cooper, 23, and Justin Semenoff, 35, are among 705 people worldwide who are about to be interviewed by the Mars One selection committee which is looking to form the first permanent human settlement on the red planet.
“It’s an unprecedented adventure and I want to see how far I can take it,” said Semenoff, an army combat engineer with the Department of National Defence.
More than 200,000 people applied to leave Earth behind when Mars One, a Dutch non-profit organization, opened a call for applicants last spring. That number was whittled down to 1,058 in December 2013 and shortlisted applicants were required to get a medical statement of health and create a public profile on the organization’s website. The 705 who completed the tasks — including 56 currently residing in Canada — now move onto the interview stage. Only 24 will be selected to go to Mars starting in 2024...Continue reading...

Five brave animals inducted into Purina Animal Hall of Fame

He walked to the stage on a red carpet bedecked with paw prints, cameras flashing and cheering onlookers craning to get a closer look at their hero. But when the time came for Rocky, an 8-year-old husky-Labrador mix flown from Alberta especially for the occasion, to take the podium, he refused.
And after a few valiant efforts on the part of his owner, Adam Shaw, Rocky curled up behind the podium to receive his medal.
“He’s a bit shy today,” Shaw said to chuckles from the crowd.
A modest hero.
In March 2013, Rocky jumped into the freezing North Saskatchewan River to save a drowning stranger, 9-year-old Samara Wagner-Sunshine. Minutes more, Shaw was told, and the little girl would have been dead.
“I’m as grateful as any mother would be and beyond,” Samara’s mother, Miranda Wagner, told the crowd in a pre-recorded video that featured Samara and her 10-year-old sister, Krymzen, showering the big brown dog with affection. “To me he’s our angel.”
Rocky was one of five animals inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame Monday in Toronto. In the last 46 years, the annual award has honoured 136 dogs, 27 cats and one horse...Keep reading...

Boaters warned of invasive mussels. The StarPhoenix

By Jonathan Charlton, The Starphoenix: Boaters warned of invasive mussels

Zebra mussels have spread west to Lake Winnipeg, and experts are warning they and other invasive species could come to Saskatchewan if boaters aren't careful.

Photograph by: John L. Russell, The Canadian Press File Photo , The Starphoenix

The aquatic invasive species working group has a simple, critical message for Saskatchewan boaters: don't move a mussel.
To protect the province's waters, boaters must thoroughly clean their boats and equipment when they travel, the group says.
Quagga mussels have infested the Colorado River system and are spreading through the Pacific Northwest. Zebra mussels have long been established in Quebec, Ontario and the eastern U.S., and have now been found in Lake Winnipeg.
Saskatchewan waters are next in line.
The dime-sized filter feeders have no natural predators, and one female can lay up to 20,000 eggs. As they spread, they consume the phytoplankton critical for local ecosystems. They also clog water intakes and other infrastructure.
By consuming the phytoplankton, zebra mussels have left Lake Ontario so devoid of natural wildlife and the water so clear that it's become a scuba diving destination, Peter Kingsmill of the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve said.
Redberry Lake itself is safe as the mussels don't fare well in salt water, but freshwater lakes are at risk.
Boaters may be aware zebra mussels are a problem outside the province, but they may not know the mussels are on Saskatchewan's doorstep, Kingsmill said.
While the province isn't connected to the Colorado River and is only indirectly connected to Lake Winnipeg, the mussels are mainly transported by people.
They can attach to boats, anywhere from the propeller to the trailer hitch. They can also attach to float planes, seashells, and agricultural and industrial machinery. They can be spread through fishing derbies. The juvenile mussels are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, making a thorough cleaning important.
"There could be a thousand of them in your live well, and you can't see them," Brad Ashdown of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation said.
