Some deep thoughts from the 'bluebird of bitterness'
deep thoughts
Warning: Dates on calendar are closer than they appear.I wouldn’t have to manage my anger if other people would just manage their stupidity.
If I ever end up on life support, unplug me… then plug me back in again. See if that works.
We have only ourselves to blame for all the crime today. We got rid of all the phone booths, and now Superman has nowhere to change.
To this day, the kid who used to bully me at school still takes my lunch money. On the plus side, he makes very good Subway sandwiches.
My opinion offended you? You should hear the ones I keep to myself.
A penny saved is just another thing for the cat to knock off of the dresser.
My life feels like a test I didn’t study for.
A gun in the hand is worth an entire police force on the phone.
Dear Karma, I have a list of people you missed...more deep thoughts...

The heavy smoke blanketing the city has forced many people to stay indoors.
"It’s just not safe for the players to be out there," said Erin Fehr, operations coordinator for Saskatoon Youth Soccer.
Fehr said around 10 end-of-season games for kids under 12 had to be cancelled Monday as heavy smoke continued to pour into the city from northern forest fires.
Some coaches may decide to reschedule, but for others it might just be the end of the season, she said.
Soccer players weren’t the only ones forced indoors. As Environment Canada issued an air quality alert for the city, outdoor city pools were also closed and health officials warned about the negative effects of breathing the heavy smoke.
"We want everyone to stay indoors," said Jill Hubick of the Lung Association of Saskatchewan...Read more>>http://www.thestarphoenix.com/health/People+warned+take+precautions+smoke+fills+city/11176440/story.html

Giant goldfish multiplying in Alberta ponds
Just a handful of the 40 goldfish removed from a Fort McMurray storm
pond in 2015. According to the province, some were as large as dinner
plates. (Rebecca Baldwin / Alberta Environment and Parks)
CBC News
The province is launching a campaign this summer to stop people from releasing their pet fish into the wild.
Goldfish, some the size of dinner plates, are being found from Lethbridge to Fort McMurray, the province says.
"It's quite a surprise how large we're finding them and the sheer number," said Kate Wilson, aquatic invasive species coordinator at Alberta Environment and Parks.
In one case, the municipality of Wood Buffalo pulled 40 of the domestic fish species from a storm water pond.
"That's really scary because it means they're reproducing in the wild, they are getting quite large and they are surviving the winters that far north," said Wilson...Continue reading...

Spend A Night With The Rat-Hunting Dogs Of New York City
- Kevin Loria: New York's rats are nasty, and there are about two million of the furry, disease-carrying creatures roaming the streets and alleys of the city.
If you call the city about a rat problem, they'll give you tips on keeping them out and tell you how to find a pest control company to poison the rodents.
But there are others out there who hunt New York's vermin, and they don't do it for pay — they do it because it's in their nature (and because their owners want to let working terriers "do what they do best").
The rat hunters of New York are known as the Ryders Alley Trencher Fed Society (R.A.T.S.). They train dogs to hunt rats and will take the canines anywhere requested to, as they say, eRATicate the pests, provided the location is safe for the dogs, away from traffic, and relatively pedestrian-free...Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-rat-hunters-of-new-york-2014-11?op=1#ixzz3e6F5OecD
New York City Escalates the War on Rats Once Again
For centuries, New York City’s white whale has been the common rat.
Traps have been set and poisons brewed, to little apparent effect. Emergency conclaves have been called at City Hall.
There
have been 109 mayors of New York and, it seems, nearly as many mayoral
plans to snuff out the scourge. Their collective record is approximately
0-108.
“Just
follow the numbers,” said Joseph J. Lhota, once the designated “rat
czar” as a deputy mayor under Rudolph W. Giuliani. “Anybody who’s in
charge of eradicating rats in New York knows exactly what Sisyphus felt
like.”
Yet
across the city, a new administration is betting that New York — long
the Chicago Cubs of rodent control — might just be due. The city budget,
agreed upon this week, includes $2.9 million in rat plan money. Mayor
Bill de Blasio described the animals, with a touch of swagger, as “one
New York City institution that we’re happy to get rid of.”
Along
avenue medians and inside tree pits, beneath sewer grates and deep in
the thickets of park foliage, the city’s vermin vision is taking hold...Continue reading...
Lyme disease not the only reason to avoid ticks
By Ashley Welch, CBS News: Ever since Dean Traut contracted Lyme disease, he's been extra
cautious when it comes to protecting himself and his grandchildren from
ticks.
"It's probably the worst illness or pain I've been through," he told CBS News.
Ticks are most active in the months of April through October and peak in the summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness, it's not the only one. A report published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that a newly recognized illness called Borrelia miyamotoi disease (BMD) is becoming more common in the northeastern part of the United States. It was first seen in this country in 2013.
Symptoms include "fever, severe headache, lots of body aches," said Dr. Bobbi Pritt, director of the Clinical Parasitology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic. "People can die from this."...Continue reading...

Cat clings to plane wing for flight

Jamie Grierson:
A cat has escaped with at least one of its nine lives after stowing away on an ultra-light aircraft flight.
A video has been posted on YouTube of the cat digging its claws into the aircraft’s wing as its pilot and passenger fly hundreds of feet above the ground at first apparently unaware of its presence.
Romain Jantot, understood to be the pilot in the clip, cites a flying club in Kourou, French Guiana, in the film’s description. He uploaded the video on Sunday and it has already received more than 75,000 views.
“A standard flight until … I still don’t know if it got in after the pre-flight check or if I missed it,” he says. “The cat is doing well, she is still our mascot.”

World traveller hired to be Saskatchewanderer
Saskatchewanderer spends the year touring Saskatchewan and sharing her adventures
By Ashleigh Mattern, For The Starphoenix:
World traveller Ashlyn George is the new Saskatchewanderer.
Photograph by: Submitted photo , The StarPhoenix
Ashlyn George has travelled six of the world's seven continents. She plans to visit the last, Antarctica, early next year.George describes herself as an outdoor adventure adrenalin junky. She completed her dive masters in the Galapagos Islands, trekked through untouched national parks in Madagascar, hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - and that was just in 2014. Before then, she went skydiving in New Zealand, climbed Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia, and hiked the Rucu Pichincha trail in Ecuador, among many other adventures.
Her latest great adventure: Exploring her home province as Tourism Saskatchewan's "Saskatchewanderer."
After everything she has experienced as a traveller, one might think that coming back to Saskatchewan is a bit bland, but George disagrees.
"It's the exact same," she says. "I still get the same feeling of adventure when I'm travelling Saskatchewan as when I'm travelling the world."...Read more: http://www.thestarphoenix.com/travel/World+traveller+hired+Saskatchewanderer/11153173/story.html#ixzz3ddcWsmWu

The unglamorous plight of a female alcoholic
A blackout drinker’s memoir as cautionary tale
by Erinn Beth Langille: Sarah Hepola gained fame as an American magazine writer and editor, including her turn as Salon‘s personal-essays editor. Now comes her brutally honest memoir, where she’s calling the bluff on the glamour of her once-saucy life. The book follows Hepola from her early childhood in Texas, stealing beer from her parents’ fridge, through to high school parking-lot piss-ups and college ragers—just teen mischief, if the author didn’t make such a case for these being the building blocks of addiction. By the time she reaches her mid-20s, her problem is as obvious to her as it is to her friends, as huge swaths of her life get lost in a terrifying amnesiac abyss. It takes another decade or so, with the help of therapy and AA, to shine a more permanent light on that darkness.
Her account is funny, touching and painful—no doubt set up with the deft and occasionally vainglorious hand of a click-bait pro, but with the soul of something deeper and much more resonant. Through her personal story, Hepola illuminates how the various issues in women’s lives—from body dysmorphia, dieting and celebrity culture, to the pressure of perfect parenting and the work-life “lean in”—are, for some women, mediated, muddied and self-medicated with booze. Especially troubling are the ways in which Hepola links blackouts to rape culture and consent, sure to be one of the more controversial aspects of a controversial book...Read more...

Real or fake? The clip was uploaded by a German-based special effects guru and animator Kaleb Lechowski, sparking discussion across social media and on this YouTube thread regarding the authenticity of it.
Everyone is unanimous though - it'd be quite an unpleasant surprise to find in your fruit. Not appealing at all...https://au.news.yahoo.com/viral/a/28459951/video-of-spider-bursting-out-of-banana-goes-viral/

fire hazards. In this video the goats are being herded (wait for dog at

Man snaps picture of raccoon on top of gator in Ocala
WFTV Morning News
Richard Jones
OCALA, Fla. —
A Palatka man said he snapped a picture of a raccoon on top of an alligator in the Ocala National Forest Sunday morning.
Richard Jones said he and his family were walking along the Oaklawaha River watching alligators when his son walked through some palm fronds to get a good picture.
Jones said his son must have startled the raccoon, which stumbled toward the water and hopped on top of the gator that was nearby
Jones was able to quickly take the unique photo before the raccoon scurried back on land.
"I snapped a lucky picture right when the gator slipped into the water and before the raccoon jumped off and scurried away. Without the context you'd think the raccoon was hitching a ride across the river. Pretty amazing," Jones said in an email. "Definitely the photo of a lifetime." http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/man-snaps-unique-picture-raccoon-top-gator-ocala-n/nmcmC/

NASA makes music video for its huge new Mars rocket (America’s Next Great Rocket )
- by

- To get us to deep space, including planned missions to grab an asteroid and move it into a lunar orbit and eventually to take astronauts to Mars, NASA needed a big new rocket system. And to get the public excited about that system, not-so-sexily named the "Space Launch System" or
- SLS, the agency clearly needed to create a rockin' music video...Continue reading...

Stamford Man Calls 911 After Three-Hour Standoff With His Cat
[Kitty Mittens, my friend. She is not ferocious.]
by Frank MacEachern
STAMFORD, Conn. -- A Stamford man called 911 during a three-hour standoff -- with his cat -- early Wednesday, police said.
The man told police that his 7.5-pound cat attacked him as he tried to enter his Shippan Avenue residence, Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.
The ferocious feline forced the man to retreat and an ensuing standoff lasted for three hours before the man called 911 at about 1:30 a.m., Connelly said.
Eventually, the man mustered up enough courage to walk into the residence and go to bed, she said.
Police advised both parties to stay away from each other for the remainder of the night, Connelly said. http://yonkers.dailyvoice.com/police-fire/stamford-man-calls-911-after-three-hour-standoff-his-cat

Silence about Muslim horrors means consent
By James Lewis
Brigitte Gabriel is a hero for our times, a Churchillian voice of moral outrage -- which our president and liberal media seem unable to hear. Their silence means consent, because they know, they know...
Ms. Gabriel is a Lebanese Christian describing the systematic persecution, murder, rape, and slave-taking against Christians in the Middle East -- Christians who have lived there since the time of Jesus.
If we ever manage to make Americans face the reality of Jihad, it will be due to men and women like Brigitte Gabriel. Like Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer and Geert de Wilder, they are risking their lives to save civilized society, constantly opposed by the malicious liberal media and death threats from Muslim fascists.
As always, the Left’s silence about Islamofascist massacres means consent. The Left is utterly cold-hearted.
Obama never admits to making a mistake, but his refusal to even say the words “Muslim massacres” convicts him as an enabler of systematic genocide. I don’t know if Obama is a secret Muslim, but it doesn’t really matter -- because his silence means consent. Whatever he believes, he stands convicted by his silence.
Every week ISIS uploads videos celebrating sadistic murders of innocents. But Obama says nothing...Read more: http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2015/05/silence_about_muslim_horrors_means_consent.html

California’s Drought Is So Bad, Thieves Are Now Stealing Water
Photo Illustration by Dair Massey/The Daily Beast
In drought-plagued California, thieves are getting mighty thirsty.
At least one managed to make off with a 500-gallon water tanker. The wide load just up and vanished from a highway offramp.
It was early morning last Thursday when the Marina landscaping tanker truck was idling on a median by a tunnel in Oakland, according to police reports. Then some clever perp jacked it—and rode off with its tapped cargo.
It’s one of a growing number of water-related crimes in California, where Governor Jerry Brown has issued an executive order to cut water use by 25 percent (PDF). These tough times are forcing them to forsake their signature emerald lawns, cut carwash trips, flush the toilet only for number twos. It’s such an incendiary climate that any Dick that forgets about the running hose for days might as well cop a plea as an arsonist...Continue reading...
