ONION LAKE CREE NATION — Philip Chief is nervous.
After the week he and other residents of the Onion Lake Cree Nation have had, it’s understandable.
When snow began to melt and trickle down the rolling hills at the north end of the reserve’s main settlement, unexpected gushes of water cut clear through some of the First Nation’s busiest roads.
On Thursday, Chief, co-chair of the First Nation’s community emergency response plan committee, heard there’s even more water to come.
“We feel that we’ll be adequately ready for whatever Mother Nature has to throw at us,” he said. “It’ll be tough. It’s been a long three days. I think it’s going to be longer.”
Wisely, many of the homes and ranches in the Seekaskootch settlement on the reserve have been built on high ground. The sewers backed up in a few of the lower-lying houses earlier this week, but that mess has since been mopped up. Water has surrounded one home in the settlement’s west end.
